What it Means to Be at Sage

Just as education means different things to different people, each person experiences The Sage School in his or her own way. However, when you listen to the comments of current students, parents, teachers, and alumni, you’ll hear some common themes about what The Sage School has meant for them.

"Many gifted students look for concrete answers. It’s wonderful to teach these students creative work – it helps them discover there isn’t always a right or wrong answer, not everything is black or white, and it’s okay to express yourself in new and different ways."

- Ms. Bazinet
Performing Arts Teacher

"The intent of the Sage after school program is to give students choices. The program allows Sage to offer a robust education for the mind and body. The Arts and Athletics Program allows students to expand their knowledge and experience in both fields. The biggest advantage is that students can participate in both sections."

- Mr. Bourn
Athletic Director and Physical Education Teacher

"Sage is like a second home. You get to know the families on a more personal level than in most school communities. It’s great to see my former students develop as they move on to different levels and I’ve enjoyed teaching the younger siblings of those who have already passed through my classroom."

- Ms. Krikelis
Humanities Department Chair/Pre-Prime Division Teacher

"My National Endowment for Humanities grant gave me the opportunity to study African American history in Washington, DC and will directly impact my curriculum planning and teaching."

- Ms. Cordes-Vaughan
Middle School Team Leader/Humanities Teacher

"I always felt at home at Sage. I particularly liked the close relationships I had with my teachers and my friends; it is unlike any place I have ever been."

- Ben Vaughan
Alumni Class of '2000

“I really love that I work in a place where the kids are able to get hooked on language learning at a young age. I wish everyone would see themselves as a citizen of the world, and love that I have a job where I can pass on a curiosity about the world, language, and travel to students who are young enough to take it in with a clear head and develop the desire to be a fully engaged with the world in which they live.”

- Ms. Tanner
Foreign Language Department Chair and Spanish Teacher

"I love the curiosity and passion for learning that my students have. My students are insatiable learners, always eager to know about the world around them. They are sharp enough to keep me on my toes and I have to work hard to stay ahead of the curve."

- Mr. Brinkop
Junior Division Leader and Humanities Teacher

" I have high expectations of my students. I firmly believe that if you set the bar high, children always rise to meet the challenge.”

- Mrs. Jain
Prime Division Teacher

“Students don’t shy away from working hard here - they want to succeed and are excited and motivated to learn not just for a grade, but for learning’s sake.”

- Mr. Fitz-Roy
Middle School Science Teacher

“Math competitions are one exciting way to develop skills that will have long lasting impacts. Students learn to set high goals and cope with failure. It is very rare for a student to succeed without an intense and long period of preparation. All of us come to appreciate effort and see it as the key ingredient to success in addition to ability. These experiences truly inspire students. Knowing that problem-solvers are much needed in this world, we hope to plant seeds that will find a productive outlet in the future.”

- Dr. Labaudinière
Math Department Chair/Middle School Math Teacher
