The Arts

The goal of the Arts Department for a student attending classes throughout the pre-K through 8th grade years is to have meaningful exposure to all of the arts forms at an age-appropriate level, providing the opportunity for choice and differentiation through developmental stages.

The Primes student receives instruction in combined music and movement two times per week, and participates in an all-Prime chorus once per week. Primes also have a visual arts class once per week, and participate in a culminating Arts Review at the end of the year.

The Junior student moves into a four day per week arts block: for half of the year they receive instruction in visual art, and then switch into dance and music classes for the other half. As part of the Junior Division humanities curriculum, they participate in the production of a play. Junior students participate in a mid-year and year-end Arts Review.

In the Middle School, students also experience a mid-year switch for half the year they participate in visual art classes, and for half the year they receive instruction in drama. Middle School students share their achievements with the Sage community through Arts Reviews. Our expanding after-school program offers additional opportunities for students to explore their interests and refine their skills in drama, dance, and advanced dance.

After School Dance and Theater Program

It is important at a school like Sage to provide a balanced curriculum that allows students to participate in a robust program which challenges their mind and body. Sage students have the option to participate in the afterschool performing arts program supervised by Danielle Bazinet, Performing Arts Teacher.

The after school dance and theater program is open to all middle school students and juniors in their third year. This program is designed for students who are interested in studying dance and theater more in depth, with a major concentration on performance skills.

In dance, classes focus on proper techniques within the styles of hip hop, jazz, modern, and ballet. Students learn dance vocabulary and each class consists of a warm-up followed by a dance combination.

In theater, students learn acting, directing terminology, and memorization techniques. They explore ways to connect with their character through gesture, voice, and body. Emphasis is placed on improvisation activities.

Private Lessons

Private piano lessons and voice lessons are available both after school and during the school day for students of all ages and levels. 28 private lessons per academic year are supplemented by two group classes held on Sunday afternoons, an end of the year recital, and opportunities for performing both in-school and other venues.
