The Sage Learning Experience and Evaluation

Initial student assessments enable us to set appropriate goals and expectations for each individual child. With this insight into each student's strengths, our teachers – aided by specialized class groupings, relatively small class size, and interactive teaching approaches – are able to closely monitor each student's progress.

Student progress is communicated through progress reports. We report on student progress each trimester, documenting the curriculum presented in each area of study and updating parents on their child's mastery of content areas, as well as their child's social and emotional growth. Typically, students' strengths and accomplishments are discussed, as well as any challenges and areas for improvement. In addition, specific goals and suggested strategies for achieving these goals are often included.

At The Sage School, we do not measure student progress by recording letter grades on progress reports. Because of the intrinsically competitive and perfectionist nature of our students, we have found narrative-based progress reports more effective in communicating how well the student is maximizing his or her own potential.

In addition to written progress reports, we schedule Parent/Teacher conferences two times a year. Parents meet the student's core subject teachers, and may also schedule meetings with any specialists (visual or performing arts, foreign language, etc.). Parents are also encouraged to arrange meetings with faculty at any time during the school year to discuss concerns or issues.
